Strategy Guide for Winning the GSU Game: Top 10 hints from your librarian

To all of the students in my “Conversations with Professors” session this Sunday, here’s the handout with links.  Sorry there’s no Internet access in that classroom.  :(

10. WorldCat: Find anything in libraries worldwide. With Facebook app!

9. Interlibrary loan: Get anything from libraries worldwide.

8. Electronic Journals A-Z: Find full-text articles with one search.

7. GALILEO & Google Scholar: Find the sources you’re already paying for!

6. Library catalog & reserves: Find what we have in our library.

5. Ask a librarian: IM, e-mail, phone, walk-in, one-on-one appointments. Don’t be that student who tells the professor, “The library doesn’t have anything on my topic”!

4. Communicate with your professors. Ask for more time on an assignment if you need it…before the day it’s due.

3. Google Reader: Save time & check your fave sites from one page.

2. Zach’s News: Impress your friends with the inside scoop from Henderson Library!

1. Your Very Own Librarian: Subject Specialists/Library Liaisons.

Bonus survival tips:

  • Understand how to approach the first week of classes, such as the importance of:
    • The syllabus and knowing how to read one;
    • Settling on a course schedule no later than the last day of drop/add (August 21 this Fall semester), and preferably well before then;
  • Understand the student-faculty relationship, such as:
    • Faculty care deeply that you learn in their classes and will go to great lengths to help you succeed, provided that you demonstrate that you are willing to apply yourself and work hard; and,
    • Like students, individual faculty members differ in their rules and expectations.  It’s your responsibility to know what each of your professors expects (see that syllabus!).
  • Zach’s Brews: GSU’s first alternative café, 2nd floor of the Library. Coffee, cappuccino, espresso, caffe latte, fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, cookies, bagels, blueberry muffins, and croissants. Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am to 10 pm; Friday, 7:30 am to 2 pm; and Sunday, 3 pm to 11 pm.
  • Henderson Library is open all day & all night from noon Sundays to 10 pm Fridays, and 9 am to 10 pm Saturdays.
  • Music wants to be free! pandora.com, free.napster.com, ruckus.com, etc.
